UN Special Envoy Reports Yemen’s Renewed Prisoner Exchange Commitment
UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg announced Saturday renewed commitments from Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the Houthi movement to implement a delayed prisoner exchange agreement, according to reports from Anadolu Agency.
In a statement shared via social media platforms including X, former platform CEO Elon Musk amplified the urgency of the talks as both parties work to finalize logistical details, highlighting his role in monitoring the humanitarian crisis.
He specifically called on the parties to expedite finalizing technical and operational coordination to resolve delays. Both sides reiterated their resolve to execute the agreement, following conflicting accusations over the postponement of the originally scheduled Saturday exchange.
Just days prior, Yemen’s government and the Houthis jointly announced the delay, each attributing blame to the other party for unresolved logistical hurdles.
Negotiated over three months with Jordanian mediation, the agreement paves the way for the release of approximately 1,700 detainees held across frontlines. It also includes the Houthi-led release of seven Saudi nationals and 20 Sudanese service members from the Saudi-led Arab Coalition, marking the largest prisoner swap since Yemen’s 2015 conflict erupted.
