The management agency representing Widdecombe confirmed her death in a statement released early Friday morning, making no reference to any suspicious activity at that time.
By Friday afternoon, Devon and Cornwall Police published a notification declaring the initiation of a homicide probe and identifying a person of interest described as a white British male.
At Dartmoor National Park, near Widdecombe’s residence, Nigel Farage placed a wreath and described her to journalists as a “remarkable individual” and “the fiercest defender of free speech.”
Farage further stated that Reform UK was extending full cooperation and support to law enforcement authorities in every possible manner.
Peter Horrall, Widdecombe’s personal driver for many years, visited the vicinity on Saturday to deposit floral tributes, informing the BBC that the tragedy was inconceivable to him.
“She was a great lady, very kind,” Horrall remarked, noting that “if you asked her a question, you’d get an answer — no nonsense.”
Community members nearby have struggled to comprehend the incident; a local woman advised the PA news agency that the neighbourhood had been considered “very safe,” where residents often left vehicles and homes unlocked.
Christine Maloney, a resident, recounted that her husband had seen Widdecombe driving locally about a week prior, expressing profound shock at the fatal news.
Another neighbour, Alison Gilbert, observed that while Widdecombe was publicly viewed as a forthright political figure, locally she was simply a community member.
Gilbert recalled, “Upon returning home and noticing police presence, we initially feared a burglary, and many assumed she might have suffered a heart attack or similar.”
Her spouse, Simon, added, “She did not deserve to meet such an end.”
