Givat Ze’ev, a West Bank settlement located five kilometres northwest of Jerusalem, has been formally designated as a city following the signing of a decree by IDF Central Command Chief Avi Bluth on Sunday.
Founded in 1977 within the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council, Givat Ze’ev now operates as an independent municipal entity. The community is home to roughly 35,000 residents and records one of the nation’s highest population‑growth rates.
The decree upgrades the settlement’s status from a local council to an officially recognized municipality under Israeli law.
Authorities say the change will align municipal structures with planned development, scaling, and expanded residential services.
Mayor Yossi Asraf hailed the decision, stating, “This is a historic moment for Givat Ze’ev and a significant boost for settlements surrounding Jerusalem. Becoming a city is a major engine for growth and very good news for our residents.”
He added, “Along with the new status, we will enhance our capabilities while preserving the warm, rural community atmosphere that defines Givat Ze’ev.”
Asraf thanked the Central Command Chief and other professional bodies for their work, promising to continue driving the city toward higher quality‑of‑life achievements for its inhabitants.
