BANGKOK — The fatality count from a massive blaze at a Bangkok music venue has risen to 30, officials reported Tuesday.
Over 70 individuals remain hospitalized, with 24 in critical condition, according to Bangkok city officials.
The fire erupted late Sunday evening at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar, the city’s deadliest such incident in 17 years, in the northern district of Bangkok. Firefighters required half an hour to subdue the blaze.
The venue, known in Thai as a brewery or beer hall, boasted a capacity of up to 600 patrons. The exact number present on Sunday night remains unknown.
Investigators are examining the fire’s origin and whether the venue adhered to safety protocols. Police noted that many victims were located in windowless restrooms where they likely attempted to flee the flames.
Previous guests and mourners visited the scene on Tuesday, contributing to a growing heap of flowers lining the barricades surrounding thecats.
Handwritten notes in Thai and other languages, including Korean, were affixed beside white blossoms, conveying sympathies to the deceased.
Remnants such as melted musical instruments and scorched chairs were dispersed along the curb, relocated by Thai authorities on Monday as part of the investigation.
