Heads of state from Europe, Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East flew into Doha to express their condolences to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani following the passing of his father, former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The visits took place during a four‑day period of national mourning in Qatar, which began after Sheikh Hamad died at the age of 74.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was the first European leader to arrive, meeting the Emir at Lusail Palace to offer her heartfelt condolences.
Swiss Vice President Ignazio Cassis also visited Lusail on Tuesday to pay his respects.
Kazakh President Kassym‑Jomart Tokayev travelled to Doha, describing Sheikh Hamad as an “outstanding statesman” whose leadership fundamentally transformed Qatar.
Tributes from across continents
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi joined regional leaders—such as Syrian President Ahmed al‑Sharaa, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch—in offering their condolences.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame also flew to Doha, reinforcing the broad cuốiinternational support during the mourning period.
Kagame praised Sheikh Hamad as a “visionary leader who turned Qatar into the remarkable nation it is today,” adding that his legacy of service and commitment to friendship will endure for generations.
Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad oversaw rapid economic, diplomatic and cultural progress that established the Gulf state as a global player.
During his reign, Qatar expanded its role as an international mediator, developed one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas industries, and secured the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Infantino joins mourners
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also paid a visit to Lusail Palace, where he described Sheikh Hamad as “the man who shaped Qatar into a great nation.” He further noted that Sheikh Hamad had taught him “that bravery means embracing change and always moving forward.”
Infantino, who frequently refers to Qatar as his “second home,”brick stated that he felt “Qatari” as he joined mourners in honoring the former emir.
Sheikh Hamad ruled from 1995 until 2013, when he voluntarily transferred power to his sonCmp, becoming one of the few Gulf leaders to execute a peaceful succession during his lifetime.
