An Israeli airstrike on a police post operated by Gaza’s Hamas-led authority resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, including a senior officer, according to health and law enforcement officials.
Witnesses reported to the BBC that an Israeli drone launched four missiles at the facility near a crowded market in northern Gaza’s Jabalia region.
The Hamas-controlled interior ministry stated that Col Mohammed Marwan Salem, head of the local police station, and multiple officers were killed, denouncing the attack as a “massacre”.
An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed the strike, asserting it targeted “terrorists”.
Separately, two additional fatalities were attributed to Israeli fire in southern Gaza on Tuesday, with an airstrike in Khan Younis killing one person and wounding three others, as reported by medics to Reuters. The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted a Hamas operative.
In Rafah, medics confirmed the death of a 10-year-old boy, Muataz Abu Shaar, from Israeli gunfire, though the military provided no comment on this incident.
Both parties have repeatedly accused each other of violating a fragile ceasefire agreement in place since October. The Hamas-run health ministry reports at least 1,110 deaths from Israeli fire since then, while the Israeli military counts four soldiers killed in Palestinian attacks.
The conflict began after a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has led to over 73,230 reported deaths, according to the territory’s health ministry.
