The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Hezbollah fired a surface-to-air missile at an air force fighter jet on Tuesday. While the IDF described the weapon as primitive and noted it missed its target, the very act of Hezbollah employing such a missile, which has the potential to strike an Israeli fighter jet, could carry significant implications. Historically, the air force has maintained complete air supremacy, with virtually no threats to the safety of its fighter jets. The use of even primitive, portable anti-aircraft weapons by Hezbollah could fundamentally alter future air force operations. However, it is also possible this was an isolated incident with minimal long-term impact. Following the launch, the IDF reported that the air force engaged the Hezbollah operative who fired the missile as he attempted to escape on a motorcycle. The fate of the operative remains unclear.
