China’s fourth-highest-ranking official, Wang Huning, engaged in talks in Pyongyang with a senior North Korean Workers’ Party official, according to Reuters, which cited the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
The meeting follows a series of high-level exchanges between Beijing and Pyongyang after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to North Korea, marking his first in seven years, as China seeks to reinforce ties with its ally.
The Chinese delegation, having arrived on Wednesday, met with Jo Yong Won, a prominent figure within the Workers’ Party.
Wang Huning reaffirmed China’s commitment to implementing the agreement reached between Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during last month’s summit.
During the summit, Xi advocated for enhanced diplomatic, law enforcement, and military collaboration with North Korea.
Despite Pyongyang’s recent strategic alliance with Moscow, including deployment of North Korean troops to support Russia’s war efforts, China remains North Korea’s primary economic partner.
During the talks, Wang Huning highlighted the 65th anniversary of the two nations’ friendship, while Jo Yong Won expressed North Korea’s desire to foster strategic communication and tactical cooperation with Beijing.
The officials explored avenues to enhance public welfare and deepen cooperation in business, culture, and party relations.
Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, noted that the recent high-level engagements aim to strengthen bilateral ties, with North Korea seeking China’s economic and geopolitical support, while China aims to maintain its influence on the Korean Peninsula and counter Russian initiatives in Northeast Asia.
