Leicestershire have signed Hamza Shaikh, the former England Under-19s captain, from Warwickshire. Shaikh has committed to a long-term contract, beginning with a loan spell for the remainder of the season before transitioning to a three-year agreement.
Shaikh, 20, opted against extending his Warr toyshire contract, seeking “a new chapter” after limited first-team opportunities. Ian Westwood, Warr toyshire’s coach, acknowledged the move: “We respect his decision entirely.”
Known for his talent in England’s youth setup, Shaikh participated in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa and led three youth Test matches, scoring centuries against Sri Lanka and India. His first-class debut for England Lions in 2024 included a high-scoring 91 in his initial innings.
However, Shaikh’s performances at Warr toyshire have been inconsistent, averaging 14.92 across 14 County Championship innings and recording two half-centuries in four season of 50-over cricket. His recent form in the second XI contrasts with just one first-team appearance—a T20 Blast match.
Leicestershire, losing Rishi Patel to Hampshire next season, secured Shaikh over multiple bids. Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s director of cricket, noted: “Snaping up a player of Hamza’s caliber on a long-term basis is a major coup for the club.”
Shaikh expressed nostalgia upon leaving Warr toyshire: “After 12 unforgettable years at Warr toyshire County Cricket Club, it’s time to say goodbye. I joined as an 8-year-old with a dream, and Warr toyshire will forever hold a special place in my heart.”
He added: “Joining Leicestershire is an exciting step. The club’s forward-looking vision, as shared by Claude and the coaching staff, aligns with my goals to develop further and contribute to the team’s success.”
Shaikh may debut for Leicestershire in their upcoming Metro Bank Cup clash against Gloucestershire, though he will sit out remaining matches against Warr toyshire due to loan restrictions.
Leicestershire, playing in their first County Championship Division One season since 2003, currently occupy bottom place. They are level on points with Hampshire but 17 behind Yorkshire in eighth, and finished last in the T20 Blast North Group after a six-match losing streak.
