India’s Series Decider Complicated by Washington Sundar’s Hamstring Concern
India encountered an injury setback during the third ODI against England when all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out of bowling in the second innings due to a suspected right hamstring strain.
Washington picked up the injury while batting in India’s innings at Cardiff, leaving the touring side one bowler short as they defended a target of 233 in the series-deciding contest.
How did Washington Sundar get injured?
Washington arrived at the crease at No. 6 after Virat Kohli’s dismissal and appeared settled before pulling up while completing a run in the 33rd over.
The all-rounder immediately grabbed at his right hamstring and was attended to by the team physiotherapist.
Following extended on-field treatment and heavy strapping to his right thigh, Washington continued batting but was out on the next delivery, edging a short ball from Saqib Mahmood to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.
Washington Sundar does not take the field
Fears over the seriousness of the issue mounted at the start of England’s run chase when Washington did not reappear on the field.
Arshdeep Singh instead came out as India’s substitute fielder.
Broadcasters later confirmed that Washington had been withdrawn from bowling duties for the rest of the match, depriving India of a frontline spin option.
What the Washington Sundar injury means for India
Washington’s unavailability created a major tactical problem for India in the second innings.
The off-spinner had been central to the team’s middle-overs strategy throughout the series, and his absence forced captain Shubman Gill to reorganize the bowling attack while defending a modest total.
India had posted 233, with England needing a win to secure the three-match ODI series.
The BCCI has yet to issue an official statement on the extent of Washington Sundar’s injury or his status for forthcoming fixtures.
