A record 34 candidates have been confirmed for the Clacton constituency by-election, following Nigel Farage’s resignation as MP.
The Reform UK leader stepped down as MP on 7 July amid heightened scrutiny of his finances and a parliamentary inquiry, yet he remains a candidate.
The candidate list features 20 independents and several novelty contenders, among them three from the Monster Raving Loony Party, while no major party representatives are standing. Polling is scheduled for 13 August.
This marks what is believed to be the highest number of contenders ever fielded in a modern by-election, as noted by Tendring District Council.
The previous record of 26 candidates dates back to the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008, triggered by Conservative Sir David Davis in his own constituency, a contest that largely escaped attention from the main parties.
