Although Newcastle United remained interested in the player, their pursuit was characterized by significant hesitation.
Sources close to the Magpies were uncertain about the lack of firm commitment to the deal. Following their failure to secure Víctor Munoz and the previous departure of Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, Newcastle approached the situation with caution.
Those apprehensions were justified when Manzambi hesitated, allowing Villa to seize the opportunity.
Having attracted interest from more than half of the Premier League, his arrival signals the beginning of a strategic overhaul at Villa.
Villa has monitored Manzambi since the start of last season, with a transfer expected to materialize this summer.
It is understood that a knee injury—which sidelined him during Switzerland’s World Cup run through the round of 16 and the quarter-finals—provided the necessary time for him to weigh Newcastle’s interest against other options.
There is a growing consensus that this was Villa’s final opportunity to secure him; his market value was poised to skyrocket following his rapid ascent to the senior international level, having moved from the Switzerland U21s to the senior squad almost immediately.
Following his standout performances in the Bundesliga and his role in Freiburg’s Europa League final appearance against Villa, the club viewed the decision to make him their record signing as a calculated and worthwhile investment.
His tactical versatility is particularly vital for the squad, especially in light of Onana’s recent long-term knee injury.
Last season, Manzambi—who earned the Europa League Young Player of the Season award—led the Bundesliga in 10+ meter progressive carries (116), shot-ending carries (13), and fouls drawn (78).
As the most fouled player in the division, he was surpassed in youth and productivity only by Yan Diomande, Bazoumana Toure, and Can Uzun.
He also ranked second in the league for total take-ons (71), successful take-ons in the opposition half (52), and total carry distance (2,476 metres).
In comparison, last term Tielemans averaged 10 metres per progressive carry with 109 total carries, while Onana recorded 75, and only three of Tielemans’ carries resulted in a shot.
