How Will Buffett’s Donations Work?
Buffett’s plan involves converting 8,000 Class A shares into 12 million Class B shares, with a conversion ratio of roughly 1,500 Class B shares per Class A share. Of these, he donated 9 million shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, 1 million each to the Sherwood Foundation and Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and 1 million shares to the NoVo Foundation. Based on July 13 closing prices of $496.85 for Class B shares and $744,850 for Class A shares, the donation totaled approximately $5.96 billion. After the transfers, Buffett retains 1,162 Class B shares (valued at $577,340) and 188,290 Class A shares (valued at $140.25 billion).
Impact on Berkshire Hathaway Stock Price
Buffett’s charitable distribution of shares is neither a bullish nor bearish indicator for Berkshire’s stock price. Since he is transferring ownership rather than selling shares, the market impact is expected to be minimal. Even if all 12 million Class B shares were sold, this would represent just 0.85% of the company’s 1.4 billion outstanding shares—a negligible volume shift. Long-term concerns for shareholders may focus on Berkshire’s underperformance relative to the S&P 500, which saw 314% total returns over the past decade compared to Berkshire’s 235%.

While Buffett’s philanthropy marks a significant milestone, it does not signal challenges for Berkshire’s future. Shareholders may instead focus on CEO Greg Abel’s potential to drive improved performance.
