NICOSIA, July 20 (Reuters) – Cyprus commemorated the 52nd anniversary of Turkey’s 1974 invasion Monday as Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities prepared for renewed efforts by the United Nations to address a decades-long stalemate in peace talks.
Air raid sirens echoed across southern Greek Cypriot areas early Monday, marking the hour Turkish forces landed in 1974 following a brief-led Greek-backed coup.
Military displays were scheduled in the Turkish Cypriot north, a self-proclaimed entity recognized solely by Ankara.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to visit July 27-29, aiming to reignite stalled negotiations that have seen no meaningful dialogue for years.
“We hope conditions will allow negotiations to resume,” Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides stated.
The impasse stems from fundamental disagreements: Greek Cypriots favor reunification as a federation, while Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leaders insist on dual sovereign states.
The conflict remains a friction point between NATO allies Greece and Turkey, complicating Ankara’s EU accession ambitions, with Cyprus having joined the bloc since 2004.
Turkey frames the 1974 invasion as a ‘peacekeeping operation’ to safeguard Turkish Cypriots, conducted amid prolonged intercommunal tensions post-independence from Britain.
