Brisbane Mother Welcomes Rare Identical Quadruplets, a One‑in‑15‑Million Miracle

A 34‑year‑old Brisbane resident has delivered four naturally conceived identical quadruplets, an event believed to be unprecedented in Australia.

Jenitar Na’amoana, already a mother of four, had not been expecting another pregnancy; the quadruplets arose from a rare “one in 15 million” conception, where a single fertilised egg split into four embryos.

By delivering the girls via cesarean at just over 28 weeks’ gestation at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Na’amoana became the mother of eight, supported by a large medical team.

“This is unheard of; we don’t believe it has ever occurred in Australia,” said Alexa Bendall, a maternal‑fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician at the hospital.

“There may have been only a handful of similar cases worldwide—perhaps just two,” she added.

Na’amoana was still breastfeeding her youngest child when she learned she was pregnant again.

The family was stunned to learn that their “little miracle” would turn out to be a medical rarity.

“When they discovered they were expecting four babies rather than one, they were utterly shocked,” Bendall said.

Four new additions—Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa (named after Dr. Bendall)—joined the Na’amoana household following their birth on July 14.

Dr. Bendall has been overseeing Na’amoana’s care since she first learned of the surprise pregnancy.

“They are very special,” Bendall said. “We are thrilled to be able to care for this remarkable family, which has now grown considerably.”

“One of the girls bears my name, which is a wonderful tribute,” she added.

Although the pregnancy was deemed high‑risk, Na’amoana “took everything in stride from day one,” Bendall noted.

“We have never encountered a spontaneously conceived quadruplet pregnancy like this,” Bendall said. “She has avoided every possible complication for both herself and her babies, and today we have four healthy newborn girls.”

The infants are expected to remain hospitalized for an extended period before discharge, but their long‑term prognosis is very positive, Bendall added.

The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical, travel, and daily living costs, as well as to purchase a van capable of seating at least ten to twelve passengers.
