Bitcoin Japan, affiliated with Asia’s MicroStrategy-inspired entity Metaplanet, has initiated a $4 million BTC acquisition from a $60 million convertible bond raise partnered with EVO Fund, marking the company’s first cryptocurrency treasury purchase. The Tokyo-headquartered firm aims to strengthen its position as a Bitcoin advocate through media, data tools, and ecosystem development initiatives aligned with global blockchain expansion goals.
The acquisition ties to Metaplanet’s broader strategy of mirroring Nasdaq-listed Strategy’s (formerly MicroStrategy) Bitcoin accretion model. Since commencing BTC buys in 2024, Metaplanet has accumulated 43,000 tokens valued at $2.8 billion—a milestone despite its shares declining over 50% year-to-date amid sector volatility.

Bitcoin Japan’s move reflects mounting interest in crypto treasuries, though market downturns have pressured valuations: Strategy’s stock has dropped ~80% as assets depreciate. The subsidiary joins a cohort of financial firms cautiously re-entering accumulation strategies despite regulatory uncertainty.
Regulatory Clarity Accelerates
Japan’s evolving crypto framework is shaping market dynamics. Lawmakers recently reclassified cryptocurrencies as “financial assets,” expediting regulatory approvals for derivatives and Bitcoin ETFs. The amendment, reported by NHK and Reuters, signals Tokyo’s intent to modernize crypto infrastructure within 12 months—aligning with Bitcoin Japan’s mission to foster ecosystem maturity.
Despite sector headwinds, firms like Bitcoin Japan perceive depressed asset valuations as strategic entry points. Analysts note this aligns with global trends where traditional financial institutions prioritize crypto integration despite cyclical market corrections.
