Nathan Fernandes’ Maiden Century Propels Middlesex to Opening Victory Over Essex

Middlesex 294 for 8 (Fernandes 112, Critchley 4-55) beat Essex 253 by 41 runs

Nathan Fernandes’ maiden white-ball hundred laid the foundation for Middlesex to launch their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign with a 41-run victory over Essex at Radlett.

The opener recovered from a nasty blow to the helmet early in his innings, when a delivery from Charlie Bennett reared sharply off the surface, to compile 112 from 130 balls. He shared a crucial century partnership with Luke Hollman as Middlesex posted 294 for eight. Matt Critchley, standing in as captain for the absent Tom Westley, claimed four for 55, but Essex’s chase faltered despite Noah Thain’s 74 from 93 balls and a career-best 51 from 65 by Simon Fernandes.

Hollman finished with three for 51, while Toby Roland-Jones, Naavya Sharma, and Noah Cornwell each claimed two wickets as Middlesex sealed the win with 22 balls remaining.

Critchley opted to field first under overcast conditions after winning the toss, a decision initially justified by a miserly opening spell from Jamie Porter (one for 28 from eight overs). The experienced seamer conceded just 17 runs in his first eight overs, claiming the wicket of Josh de Caires, while Middlesex endured nearly ten overs without a boundary and lost Sam Robson, who miscued Zaman Akhter to mid-off.

Ben Geddes provided brief momentum with 36 from 39 balls, striking sixes off Akhter and Mackenzie Jones, but fell attempting another pull shot, caught by Bennett at mid-on. However, Fernandes steadied the innings and, after reaching fifty with a driven four off Critchley, accelerated alongside Hollman (40 from 51). The pair added 110 in 116 balls before Hollman departed.

Despite a brief stall in the nineties, Fernandes reached his hundred with a single before becoming Critchley’s second victim. A late flourish from Zafar Gohar, who struck an unbeaten 22 from 13 balls including three sixes, lifted Middlesex close to the 300-mark.

Thain and Robin Das gave Essex a brisk start, the latter targeting Sharma for a series of off-side boundaries as the seamer’s third over yielded 22 runs. Cornwell struck with his first delivery to break the 57-run opening stand, Sharma taking a sharp low catch to dismiss Das. Roland-Jones then struck twice in four balls, removing the dangerous Critchley to leave Essex reeling at 92 for four.

Simon Fernandes counter-attacked impressively against the spinners, reverse-sweeping Gohar with precision and reaching fifty with consecutive boundaries off Hollman. The leg-spinner eventually turned the tide, bowling Thain to end a fifth-wicket stand of 86, then holding a return catch to dismiss Fernandes in his next over.

Debutant Ali Zeb refused to surrender, finishing unbeaten on 34 from 32 balls, but he ran out of partners as Sharma returned to claim the final two wickets in successive deliveries, wrapping up the Middlesex victory.
