The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has incorporated padel as a mandatory component of its training program at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, with the goal of enhancing players’ physical fitness and overall athletic capabilities.
Under this new initiative, athletes participating in long-term training camps at the NCA will be required to engage in padel sessions for 40 minutes every other day as part of their regular fitness regimen. This addition is designed to improve agility, reflexes, endurance, and fielding abilities while also making training more dynamic and engaging.
The initiative was introduced by senior selector and director of high performance Aqib Javed, who is convinced that padel offers substantial fitness advantages and complements cricket-specific conditioning.
“Many of our players are already playing padel sports regularly but had to travel long distances to the limited courts in their home towns. We have now built a padel court facility at the NCA for the players,” Aqib was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Padel, a sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, is played on a smaller enclosed court. Although the playing area is compact, the game requires rapid movement, sharp reflexes, and high levels of stamina. According to Aqib, these attributes make it an ideal activity for cricketers seeking to enhance their athleticism and on-field performance.
This latest move by the PCB forms part of a broader strategy to modernize training facilities at the National Cricket Academy and offer players a more comprehensive development program.
In addition to the mandatory padel sessions every alternate day, the board plans to introduce several new recreational and sporting amenities at the academy, including basketball courts and an indoor games hall featuring snooker and other indoor activities.
Aqib also disclosed that the NCA has already installed an AI-powered bowling machine, underscoring the board’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to optimize player preparation.
With these enhancements, the PCB aims to transform the National Cricket Academy into a state-of-the-art high-performance center where players can refine not only their cricket skills but also their fitness, agility, and overall physical conditioning in preparation for international competitions.
