The former world titleholder, who has been out of the ring for several years, has now declared his return to professional boxing.
James DeGale, the 40‑year‑old IBF super‑middleweight champion who captured Olympic gold and a world title by defeating Andre Dirrell in 2015, has confirmed his comeback.
His most recent bout was a split decision loss to Chris Eubank Jr in 2019, though he contested a bare‑knuckle exhibition against Matt Floyd in September of last year.
He is scheduled to meet former English welterweight champion Marcus Portman in Wolverhampton on Saturday, September 26. However, the contest is expected to be unlicensed by the British Boxing Board of Control.
In a recent interview with TalkSport, DeGale stated that while he is not pursuing a world‑title opportunity, he is targeting high‑profile bouts against figures such as Jake Paul or other prominent Misfits fighters.
“I can’t go out how I went out against Eubank, I’ve stayed in shape, and after Floyd, I want to have one more in boxing.”
“Boxing has changed since I left. There is Misfits, and the Saudis have come in.
“My world title days are done but there are fights out there like Jake Paul, Darren Till, Ty Mitchell, KSI and Tommy Fury.”
The contracted weight for the DeGale‑Portman matchup remains unspecified, but a successful outcome could position ‘Chunky’ as a possible opponent for several Misfits personalities.
