Christian Pulisic will miss Milan’s 2026 preseason friendly against Celtic, sparking anticipation for his first appearance under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
Several other key players are also sidelined after summer international duties, so Milan will travel to Glasgow with a youthful, experimental lineup.
Milan will travel to Celtic Park for its opening preseason friendly on Saturday, July 25, giving Amorim his first chance to trial tactics against external opposition.
The Italian side previously held an internal training match against Milan Futuro, securing a 7-0 victory, but the encounter with the Scottish champions presents a far tougher test. Celtic has progressed markedly in its preparations, making the fixture a crucial early assessment of Milan’s evolving tactical approach.
Pulisic’s Absence
The cause of Pulisic’s absence is clear: he remains on post‑World Cup vacation and will not report back to Milanello until July 29. Milan released a return timetable indicating that Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez will rejoin training next week.
While vacation is the immediate factor keeping Pulisic out of the Celtic match, he is still recovering from a World Cup‑related injury. According to The Athletic, Pulisic sustained a bone bruise and microfracture in his right leg during the United States’ Round of 16 loss to Belgium. The injury occurred when he attempted a shot and collided with Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans.
Although he initially tried to stay on the field, Pulisic was later substituted after twisting his ankle and knee in a single play. The American explained, “I just totally twisted my ankle and my knee in one play,” and subsequent medical examinations revealed a bone bruise and microfracture, though doctors believe recovery will require weeks rather than months.
Milan Adopts a Cautious Strategy
Italian reports say Milan has no intention of rushing one of its most important attacking players back onto the pitch.
La Gazzetta dello Sport and MilanNews report that the recovery process begins with rest before rehabilitation gradually replaces the 27-year-old’s normal preseason training. The club’s primary objective is to have him available for the opening Serie A fixture against Torino on August 23, though no unnecessary risks will be taken.
The reports suggest the Rossoneri might even postpone his return slightly if extra recovery time improves his long‑term condition. Given the club’s demanding opening schedule, Amorim prefers a fully fit Pulisic over an early comeback.
