Accomplice to Manchester Synagogue Attacker Sentenced to Life for Terror Reconnaissance

An associate of the individual responsible for the Manchester synagogue attack has been sentenced to life imprisonment following his involvement in hostile reconnaissance at a military installation.

Mohammad Asim Bashir, 31, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years and 135 days on Thursday. In addition to his imprisonment, Bashir will be subject to lifetime terrorism notification requirements.

The sentencing follows an extensive investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW) into the October 2025 terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Yom Kippur. Investigators analyzed the mobile devices of the attacker, Jihad al-Shamie, which identified Bashir as a close associate who shared extremist ideologies.

Evidence from WhatsApp communications between the two men revealed discussions regarding preparations for “war” and frequent antisemitic rhetoric.

Bashir endorsed jihadist violence in Syria

Investigations revealed that in December 2024, following al-Shamie’s expressions of envy regarding militants in Syria, Bashir confirmed he had researched the Salafi-jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), expressing hope for the establishment of Sharia law in the region. Bashir also admitted to finding gratification in viewing videos depicting the beheading of Syrian soldiers.

The pair were active members of a WhatsApp group titled “Aspiring to the Ranks of the Elite,” which included ten other individuals. Over a six-month period, Bashir contributed more than 2,000 messages to the group. During sentencing, Justice Cheema-Grubb noted that many of these communications advocated for physical violence in the name of jihad, including incitements to murder and persecution.

“You exalted martyrdom,” the judge stated while addressing Bashir. “You praised Palestinian fighters and posted messages regarding the restoration of glory to Muslim lands through the extermination of Jewish men and the taking of Jewish women as concubines. Through three specific posts, you distributed material from the American Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who endorsed violence as a religious obligation.”

Terrorism reconnaissance targeting UK Defence Academy

Beyond extremist digital communications, the court established that Bashir and al-Shamie conducted a 10-hour round trip on August 14, 2025, to perform hostile reconnaissance of the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham. The judge noted the motive was centered on the presence of IDF soldiers training at the facility.

Bashir served as the driver for the majority of the trip, while al-Shamie used his phone to record notes on the base’s security protocols under a file titled “espionage.” This data, supported by CCTV and audio recordings of the pair discussing attack plans, formed the core of the evidence against Bashir.

The prosecution characterized Bashir during the proceedings as a “long-standing, committed jihadist.”

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Cheema-Grubb drew upon biblical text to underscore the gravity of the crime. “Your example must stand as a warning to those drawn to militant, violent, and destructive interpretations of Islam for religious or political reasons,” she said. “In the Jewish book of Proverbs 13:20, it is stated: ‘He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.’ The values and behaviors of the people you revere will directly shape your own life and decisions.”

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts of CTPNW commented on the verdict, stating: “Mohammed Bashir is a dangerous individual with extremist views who engaged in discussions regarding preparations for ‘war.’ Bashir is now facing the consequences of his actions, and I hope his sentence serves as a deterrent to anyone considering involvement in extremist activities.”
