India Sweep Zimbabwe 3-0 to Reclaim ICC T20I Top Spot as Sooryavanshi Shines

Harare: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s second consecutive half-century propelled India to a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe, simultaneously restoring the side to the summit of the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings. India had briefly relinquished the top position following their series defeat to England earlier in the summer.

After electing to bat first on the same sluggish surface used for the second T20I, India endured an early blow when Abhishek Sharma fell cheaply. Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan steadied the ship with a fluent 75-run stand for the second wicket off just 50 deliveries. The teenage opener continued his rich vein of form with a superb 81, while cameos from captain Shreyas Iyer (27 off 18) and Rinku Singh (25 off 14) lifted the visitors to a competitive 192 for 5.

Zimbabwe’s chase never gained traction as India’s pace attack struck at regular intervals. Mayank Yadav dismissed Brian Bennett with the opening delivery of the innings for the second time in the series, while Yash Thakur claimed two wickets in successive deliveries during the powerplay to leave the hosts reeling.

Ryan Burl remained unbeaten on 54 and Wessly Madhevere contributed 28, but Zimbabwe could only manage 157 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Mayank finished as India’s standout bowler with figures of 3 for 29, ably supported by Thakur’s two wickets.

Despite another dominant victory, India’s fielding remained a concern. The visitors grassed five regulation chances—three off Thakur’s bowling alone—continuing a worrying trend that the team management will be keen to rectify before sterner tests await.

Sooryavanshi Climbs to Third on India’s Annual Six-Hitting Charts

Sooryavanshi’s meteoric rise in T20 cricket continues apace. The left-handed teenager has now deposited 86 sixes in the 2026 calendar year, the third-highest tally by an Indian batter in a single year.

The youngster has surpassed Suryakumar Yadav’s 85 sixes from 2022 and now trails only Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking campaigns of 108 sixes (2025) and 87 sixes (2024).

What makes Sooryavanshi’s feat even more striking is his astonishing balls-per-six ratio of 4.99—the best among all Indian batters on the elite list. The statistic underscores his fearless intent and exceptional power-hitting, as he has cleared the boundary more frequently than any compatriot in a calendar year.
