Although the global dining-out market is forecast to expand from $1.9 trillion today to over $3 trillion by 2030, many legacy restaurant chains are finding it difficult to adapt to shifting consumer preferences.
In the United States, brands such as Smokey Bones, Peet’s Coffee and Joe’s Crab Shack have shut dozens of outlets this year. Across the Atlantic, UK operators Leon and The Real Greek each cut their footprint by roughly half in 2026, reversing years of aggressive growth that had made them familiar sights in major cities.
Beefeater opened its first restaurant in the London borough of Enfield in 1974 and, over the decades, has become known as a family‑oriented steakhouse offering grilled steaks, burgers and fish‑and‑chips at reasonable prices.
Beefeater to Close All 106 UK Outlets
At its height, Beefeater operated roughly 140 freestanding sites and Brewers Fayre‑linked pubs across the UK and Ireland. Faced with rising operating expenses, Whitbread announced it will close the remaining 106 Beefeater restaurants by September.
Earlier this year Whitbread unveiled a cost‑cutting initiative intended to reduce annual expenses by £250 million (approximately $333 million).
Premier Inn remains Whitbread’s biggest asset. The group plans to transform some Beefeater sites into hotel rooms, others into unbranded hotel‑restaurant concepts, and sell the rest, a move it expects to release roughly £1.5 billion (about $2 billion).
“As you may have seen, we recently announced changes to our business that are leading to the closure of our branded restaurants,” Whitbread said in a statement. “This means that on Thursday, 10 September 2026, every Beefeater outlet in the UK will shut its doors.”
Customers who have accumulated loyalty points through repeat visits will see the Beefeater rewards programme discontinued by 31 August.
“We recognize the impact of this proposal on colleagues at the affected sites,” Whitehead said regarding Beefeater closures
As of 2026, about 3,800 staff were employed across Beefeater locations. Whitbread noted that some employees could be redeployed within its hospitality division or new hotel‑restaurant ventures, but warned that the widespread closures would lead to substantial job losses.
“We recognise the impact of this proposal on colleagues at the affected sites,” the letter to Beefeater rewards members continued. “Since we hire roughly 15,000 people annually, we aim to retain a meaningful share of those affected and will seek to reassign as many impacted colleagues as possible.”
Having operated for 54 years, Beefeater evokes nostalgia for many Britons who recall visiting the chain for family meals or special occasions in smaller towns.
“Until I went to university, the only restaurant I’d ever visited was a Beefeater,” one woman shared on Reddit. “We celebrated family birthdays there, and I absolutely loved it.”
