The Trump administration has endorsed a staged Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon as part of a disarmament agreement aimed at curbing Hezbollah’s influence, according to senior U.S. officials cited by The Jerusalem Post on Monday.
“The Framework establishes a clearly defined, conditions-driven arrangement between Israel and Lebanon,” the officials stated. “Israeli forces will progressively withdraw from Lebanese territory in exchange for Hezbollah’s permanent disarmament and expanded Lebanese control over its entire sovereign domain.”
Implementation of the agreement will focus on achieving three key objectives: restoring Lebanon’s full territorial sovereignty, eliminating Hezbollah’s military capabilities, and securing northern Israel against cross-border threats.
“Pilot operations in designated security zones commenced on July 20 in strict compliance with the Trilateral Framework, including Israeli military redeployment from the Zawtar al-Gharbiya region,” the sources reported. This development marked a tangible step forward following intensive negotiations between Jerusalem and Beirut last week in Rome.
White House representatives emphasized that U.S. envoys would maintain close coordination with both governments to ensure full implementation of the terms. “Our diplomatic team remains committed to driving this process toward its ultimate success,” the statements concluded.
The Jerusalem Post inquired whether President Trump aimed to directly address Israeli military activity in Syria with Prime Minister Netanyahu during their planned Washington meeting, but the officials declined to comment on the subject.
Netanyahu subsequently left Israel Monday to attend high-level talks, with his office announcing the bilateral discussions would address regional security challenges tied to Iran’s expanding influence.
