Explosion Traps Dozens in Private Coal Mine Near Quetta

QUETTA: An explosion in a private coal mine in the Sorange area of Balochistan’s capital caught the attention of officials on Thursday, leaving several miners trapped.

Labour leader Pir Muhammad Kakar informed Dawn that approximately 25 workers were inside the mine when the blast occurred.

“Three miners were rescued following the explosion. Around 22 workers still remain trapped inside,” Kakar said.

“All available resources must be mobilised immediately to rescue the trapped workers,” he appealed to the authorities.

Speaking to Dawn, Chief Mines Inspector Ghani Baloch said the incident occurred at the Sardar Usman Coal Company.

“Rescue teams, together with personnel from the Mines Department, were dispatched to the site as soon as information about the incident was received,” he said.

Baloch cautioned that it was premature to comment on any casualties or property damage.

Rescue 1122 Operations Director Riaz Raisani also confirmed that rescue efforts were launched immediately after being alerted.

“Given the site’s remote location relative to Quetta and its challenging terrain, the teams have yet to reach the location,” Raisani said.
