The Joburg Super Kings (JSK) have officially appointed former South Africa all-rounder and Chennai Super Kings legend Albie Morkel as their new Head Coach.
The 45-year-old succeeds long-serving coach Stephen Fleming, whose departure was confirmed earlier this month under mutual agreement. Morkel, who has been serving as JSK’s assistant coach since the inaugural SA20 season in 2022-23, will now take full charge of the franchise heading into the upcoming competition.
In an official statement, the franchise said: “Joburg Super Kings announce the appointment of Albie Morkel as the team’s Head Coach. A valued member of the Super Kings family, Albie brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the team’s culture. We look forward to this exciting new chapter under his leadership. Welcome, Coach!”
Fleming had previously stepped down from his role as CSK head coach, as the former New Zealand captain has taken up the position of England head coach.
Morkel enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) between 2008 and 2013, helping the franchise secure consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011. Renowned for his aggressive lower-order batting and reliable medium-pace bowling, he remains a beloved figure within the CSK community and ranks among the team’s all-time leading wicket-takers.
Following his retirement from professional cricket, Morkel transitioned into coaching. He has remained closely associated with the Super Kings organization across its global franchises and has also served as a specialist coaching consultant with the South African national team. His brother, Morne Morkel, continues to serve as bowling coach of the Indian cricket team.
The appointment represents a smooth transition in maintaining the Super Kings’ culture at JSK, which is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited and calls the Wanderers Stadium its home ground. Under Morkel’s leadership, the franchise will begin preparations for the next SA20 season, working alongside the existing support staff and captain Faf du Plessis.
