The island nation has maintained its stance against political negotiations while implementing economic reforms to address challenges posed by the U.S. blockade. Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío emphasized Cuba’s commitment to sovereignty during a recent interview with The New York Times, conducted on a journalism visa granted after nearly eight years.
The current U.S. campaign, characterized by an oil embargo, has intensified pressure on Cuba’s economy. Recent months have seen multiple energy grid failures and a significant decline in tourism. Despite these challenges, Cuba’s government remains functional, with citizens adapting to the ongoing difficulties.
In March, a Russian oil tanker provided limited fuel supplies, but no other nations have challenged the U.S. restrictions on fuel exports to Cuba. The government acknowledges the effectiveness of U.S. coercive measures in isolating Cuba economically but maintains hope for future diversification of energy sources.
When questioned about U.S. demands for political system changes, Fernández de Cossío stated that Cuba would not negotiate its constitutional framework. The government has introduced economic policy changes to mitigate the blockade’s impact, while expressing concern over potential humanitarian consequences of continued pressure.
The interview highlighted Cuba’s asymmetric military preparedness in response to hypothetical U.S. military actions, emphasizing the population’s role in national defense. Regarding potential foreign investment, the government remains open to U.S. business interests that comply with Cuban laws, though no specific projects have been formally accepted.
This conversation, edited for clarity, reflects ongoing tensions and Cuba’s strategic approach to navigating international pressure while maintaining political independence. The situation continues to draw close observation from both Cuban citizens and international observers.
