Persistent Eruptions at Mount Etna Halt Summer Flights, Disrupt Travel Plans

Persistent eruptions at Mount Etna have forced the closure of Sicily’s largest airport for a fifth consecutive day, leaving hundreds of summer travelers stranded during the peak vacation period. Catania Airport will remain closed until early August 15. While Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, frequently affects air traffic, this represents the longest uninterrupted shutdown since 2002.
