Eight Workers Killed in Toxic Gas Leak at Bangladeshi Ship‑Breaking Facility

At least eight workers lost their lives after a toxic gas leak at a ship‑breaking yard in the southeastern Chattogram district, officials reported on Friday.

The incident occurred at the Ferdaus Steel Shipbreaking Yard in the Sitakund subdistrict, an area that houses numerous ship‑breaking facilities where decommissioned vessels imported from around the world are dismantled.

Shortly after the leak, many workers lost consciousness and were rushed to a local hospital.

Six of the seven individuals taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital were pronounced dead, according to Dr. Istiaq Rahman of the hospital’s emergency department.

The victims exhibited signs of both physical injuries and inhalation of toxic gas, he said.

Police Officer Alamgir Hossain noted that the bodies of two additional workers were later recovered from the site.
