Local authorities were informed of a porcupine that initially consumed garden flora before a property owner reported it had entered the residence.
This event follows a previous sighting on 11 August in Łomianki, where two porcupines were captured and forwarded to veterinary care. Both were confirmed healthy by a vet.
Search Continues for Porcupine in Bemowo District
The “Kopytka z nadzieją” foundation, which supports wild and farm animals, informed TVP3 Warszawa that three animals remain at large. Investigators believe they all escaped from a single breeder.
Recent sightings in Warsaw’s Bemowo district, approximately 2-3 km from Fort Bema, have prompted urgent search efforts. The foundation advises residents to inspect courtyards, green spaces, and potential shelters.
Porcupines, large rodents recognized for their elongated quills, are primarily native to Africa and Asia. They are not indigenous to Poland, though some are kept in captivity. Experts suggest the Warsaw porcupines likely escaped from a private breeder.
Public Caution Advised Regarding Porcupine Encounters
Instances of porcupines near Kampinos Forest, including a prior report last year, have raised safety concerns. Both the foundation and Kampinos National Park urge against attempting to capture these animals independently.
Porcupines may defend themselves when threatened, and their quills can injure humans or pets. If encountered, observe the animal from a distance, document its movement, and contact the foundation at 883 720 000 with precise location details.
Exotic Animal Escapes on the Rise
Experts attribute the proliferation of non-native animals to escaped private breeding operations. Animals often flee due to poor living conditions or lack of species-specific care.
Additional cases involve owners releasing animals they can no longer maintain. Environmental organizations advocate for stricter regulations to protect native wildlife from such incidents.
