A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Peru’s southern Andes on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. As of now, no immediate reports of damage have emerged.
The seismic event occurred at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT), with its epicenter located approximately 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region. The quake originated at a depth of 66.7 kilometers.
Shaking was reported across multiple southern Peruvian regions, including Ica and Arequipa.
Peru’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it prone to frequent seismic activity.
The region recalls the devastating 2007 magnitude 7.9 earthquake in the Ica province, which resulted in nearly 600 fatalities.
