Eight individuals were killed when a chartered aircraft crashed at a remote radar station in western Alaska, according to military authorities.
The civilian-operated Cessna 441, managed by Anchorage-based Security Aviation, collided with terrain west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport on Thursday evening at approximately 8:15 PM GMT, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Rescuers who reached the crash site confirmed there were no survivors among those on board, according to an Alaskan Command statement.
Military officials have not disclosed the purpose of the flight to the radar facility, which plays a critical role in monitoring aircraft operations across Alaskan airspace.
The investigation into the crash is being conducted by Alaskan Command, with identification of the victims pending notification of their families.
“This is a devastating loss for our military community and the regions we support,” stated Alaskan Command chief Robert Davis. “These individuals were committed professionals performing essential duties in challenging conditions,” he added.
Clint Johnson, National Transportation Safety Board Alaska region director, confirmed Thursday evening that the aircraft carried two pilots and six passengers at the time of the crash.
