Tesla has announced the largest recall in the Chinese electric‑vehicle market, pledging to correct a door‑handle defect that affects nearly 3 million vehicles.
The recall follows Chinese regulators’ decision to prohibit retractable door handles amid safety concerns after a fatal incident last year, during which a driver was trapped in a burning vehicle because bystanders could not open the doors.
Although other Huis also affected, Tesla made the largest recall announced to date.
The recall covers a total of 2.98 million vehicles, including Shanghai‑manufactured Model 3s and Model Ys and other cars imported from the United States, as per a statement from China’s State Administration for Market Regulation released Friday.
Starting on 25 September, Tesla will install warning labels on the internal door handles of affected vehicles and will deliver an over‑the‑air update that lowers the windows in the event of a collision.
“The door issue has become a major concern since late last year, as regulators and passengers alike are prioritizing safety,” commented Zhang Wenjie, owner of a car‑maintenance workshop in Shanghai.
