Rabada Sidelined by Hamstring Setback Ahead of South Africa’s Critical Home Summer

South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada has sustained a right hamstring injury during winter training, disrupting his preparation schedule and casting uncertainty over his availability for the upcoming season. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed the setback in a statement on Friday, noting that the fast bowler will undergo further assessments to determine the extent of the issue.

The timing is significant as South Africa approaches its most demanding home summer in recent memory. The international calendar opens next week with a T20I tri-series in Namibia featuring Zimbabwe, followed by three ODIs against the hosts. Rabada—along with the majority of the frontline attack and both white-ball and red-ball captains, Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma—was already omitted from the travelling squad as part of a workload management strategy for the congested schedule ahead.

The Proteas’ home campaign begins in September with an ODI series against Australia, leading into a three-Test assignment. Rabada’s presence is considered vital for the red-ball leg, which continues with series against Bangladesh and England running through November to January. South Africa will be defending their World Test Championship title, making the spearhead’s fitness a top priority.

This marks Rabada’s latest injury concern following a rib issue that sidelined him for the Test series against India in late 2024—a series South Africa went on to win 2-0. His most recent Test appearance came in Rawalpindi in October 2024, where the series was drawn 1-1. Since then, he has featured in the T20 World Cup and the IPL but sat out the MLC and The Hundred.

Compounding CSA’s concerns, the South Africa A side has lost left-arm spinning all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy to a lower back spasm. Muthusamy has been ruled out of the first unofficial Test against Bangladesh A. A member of the Test squad during the 2024 subcontinent tour, Muthusamy was viewed as a potential asset for the World Test Championship defence.
