Daily consumption of peppermint oil may offer an accessible method for reducing mildly elevated blood pressure, based on recent scientific findings.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Lancashire revealed that participants who took 100 microliters of peppermint oil twice daily for 20 days experienced an average drop in systolic blood pressure—the upper figure in a blood pressure measurement—of 8.5 mmHg.
The results, recently published in the journal PLOS One, indicate that peppermint oil might serve as a straightforward, economical, and well-tolerated alternative for individuals managing mild hypertension.
Investigating a Low-Cost Strategy for Managing Hypertension
Dr. Jonnie Sinclair, lead researcher and Reader in Sport and Health Sciences, emphasized the global impact of high blood pressure: “It remains one of the leading contributors to cardiovascular disease and mortality worldwide, representing a substantial financial burden in terms of treatment.” She noted concerns regarding long-term reliance on conventional medications: “While pharmaceutical interventions are widely prescribed, their sustained effectiveness can be uncertain, and they may lead to adverse side effects.”
The naturally occurring components of peppermint—such as menthol and flavonoids—formed the basis of the investigation. Researchers recruited 40 adults aged between 18 and 65 years, assigning them randomly into two distinct groups.
Among those diagnosed with either prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension, one cohort received a modest daily dose of peppermint oil. The second group was given a peppermint-flavored placebo that contained no active extract. Outcomes demonstrated clear improvements in blood pressure readings within the peppermint oil group, whereas the placebo cohort showed no notable changes.
Beyond Blood Pressure: Comprehensive Health Monitoring
In addition to monitoring systolic blood pressure, the team assessed various health parameters, including anthropometric data, laboratory biomarkers, diastolic blood pressure—the lower number in a reading—and measures of psychological well-being and sleep quality.
Dr. Sinclair further highlighted the broader potential of these findings: “Arterial hypertension stands as the most prevalent modifiable risk factor for cardiometabolic disorders and represents the primary contributor to global mortality. Given its caloric lightness and affordability, peppermint oil proves to be both a practical and scalable intervention capable of benefiting millions globally.”
