The commemorative medal for the Sydney Marathon showcases iconic landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, which are integral to the 42.2-kilometer (26.2-mile) race route.
Observers on social media highlighted that the engraving of the stadium on the medal did not accurately represent Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, instead resembling Munich’s Allianz Arena.
The Allianz Arena in Munich is known for its distinctive exterior composed of thousands of diamond-shaped inflatable cushions, in contrast to Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, which features a smoother facade accented by long bronze fins.
Event organizers confirmed that runners would receive the medal with the incorrect stadium depiction, embracing the error with a lighthearted comment: “It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.”
They added that the mix-up has provided a talking point for the weekend, mostly met with good humor among participants and fans.
Adding to the amusement, Germany’s Allianz Arena playfully acknowledged the mistake on Instagram, stating, “Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!”
The post humorously suggested a common thread: “Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena — Sydney Opera — Unique Architecture — Both are worth a visit!”
The reverse side of the medal boasts an intricate gold and indigo pattern designed by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, which has received widespread praise for its ornate beauty.
Killian informed the BBC that he was not involved in creating the front side of the medal where the design error occurred.
The marathon, scheduled for August 30, expects around 40,000 runners, following a record ballot of over 120,000 entries.
Organizers celebrated the event’s record participation and fundraising achievements, underscoring its growing prominence.
