U.S. Marines Halt Joint Exercise Amid Iran Conflict Pressures

The United States has canceled a joint amphibious landing exercise with South Korean forces scheduled for next month, attributing the decision to resource constraints linked to the ongoing Iran conflict, as announced by the South Korean military on Monday.

The U.S. Marine Corps informed its South Korean counterparts in June that operational demands in the Middle East would preclude participation in the biennial Ssangyong exercise, formally announced by the South Korean Marine Corps. No immediate comment was provided by the U.S. military in Korea.

This cancellation represents the second joint drill with South Korea scaled back or canceled during President Trump’s second term, raising questions about Washington’s resolve to uphold deterrence on the Korean Peninsula and manage simultaneous global conflicts amid dwindling U.S. weapon stockpiles.

Ssangyong, a flagship joint exercise held for decades, typically involves over 10,000 Marines from both nations storming a South Korean beach alongside amphibious vehicles and aircraft. North Korea has historically condemned it as an invasion rehearsal.

Previously canceled during Trump’s first term—framed as “provocative” and costly amid his diplomacy with Kim Jong-un—Ssangyong was revived in 2023.

However, Trump recently criticized the drills again, deeming them “insulting” to Kim. A month ago, he ordered the Pentagon to shorten the 11-day annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise to five days.

“The U.S. and South Korean Marine Corps remain engaged in discussions about potentially resuming Ssangyong,” stated Han Seung-jeon, a South Korean Marine Corps spokesperson.

Beyond financial constraints, Trump has questioned why the U.S. should fund joint drills when South Korea opposes U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict. The war has depleted U.S. munitions and shifted military assets from Asia to the Middle East.

Trump seems poised to redirect focus from the Middle East to renewed diplomacy with Kim, with whom he once expressed personal affinity. While halting drills previously spurred negotiations with North Korea during his first term, Kim’s regime this month dismissed the scaled-down Ulchi Exercise as inconsequential.
