Arvell Reese Accelerates Development, Solidifying Role on Giants Defense

Reese will remain in the spotlight for the next four days, leading up to the Giants’ preseason matchup against the Jets on Friday, following the Jets’ decision to pass on David Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick in April and the Giants’ selection of Reese three spots later.

During the current training camp, Reese has already established himself as a vital component of the Giants’ defense and impressed by recording two additional tackles in the preseason game on Saturday.

He ranks second among defensive rookie players for PFF grade after two preseason games, posting an 88.2 rating, just behind the Buccaneers’ Rueben Bain Jr., who holds an 88.8 rating.

Harbaugh said, “He hasn’t missed a beat. He learns quickly, executes the scheme well, and promptly incorporates coaching adjustments after each play, accelerating his development rapidly.”

Reese has taken his position at inside linebacker alongside Tremaine Edmunds, the two recent additions to the Giants defense that made a strong impression during last week’s joint practice in Miami.

Harbaugh notes that Reese’s next true test will come when he begins playing in regular‑season games.

He added that the Week 1 game against the Cowboys will provide a significant step for Reese in understanding how to approach the role.

After Monday’s practice, Harbaugh convened his player‑voted leadership group on the field.

Representatives present included Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, Brian Burns, Chris Manhertz, Jordan Stout, Andrew Thomas, and Jevón Holland.

Harbaugh, who previously led a similar player‑voted group with the Ravens, explained that the collective can serve as an outlet for teammates who have concerns, even though he does not wish to share details publicly.

He humorously noted that the team requested a pool table on Monday, to which he responded that a golf simulator might be added if the team wins enough games.

Regarding the trade of offensive lineman Daniel Faalele to the Jaguars for a sixth‑round pick, Harbaugh said that acquiring late‑round selections is valuable and may prove important when Day 3 of the draft arrives.

In April, the Giants made only three selections on the final day of the draft, all in the sixth round.

Harbaugh added that the team would pursue trade opportunities whenever they arise, noting that they have depth at several positions and that such moves are not frequent but could happen.

Offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and guard Francis Mauigoa, who missed Monday’s practice due to a stinger, are expected to return on Tuesday.

Tight end Theo Johnson left the field after a collision, but Harbaugh said he should be fine.
