Target has officially apologized and removed a children’s Halloween costume after online critics accused the retailer of marketing merchandise that evoked racist imagery reminiscent of 19th-century minstrel shows.
The item, sold as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” was part of the retailer’s seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique collection. Following widespread social media backlash, Target confirmed the product has been pulled from shelves and online platforms, stating it should never have been part of the store’s inventory.
“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale,” a company spokesperson stated. The representative added that removing the costume was a necessary first step, and the company is reviewing its internal processes to prevent similar oversights in the future.
The decision to pull the product came amid intense public outcry. Social media users heavily criticized the retailer, with some pointing out the timing of the release alongside Target’s recent scaling back of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Critics argued that the clown design closely mirrored offensive historical caricatures of Black people. One prominent online comment highlighted the perceived lack of oversight, asking, “You really don’t have anyone left in Minneapolis to say, ‘Hey, that’s racist’? Y’all cut DEI and now you’ve got a minstrel clown costume for kids on your website.”
This controversy adds to a series of recent public relations challenges for the major retailer. In recent years, Target has faced consumer backlash over previous cultural campaigns and its subsequent rollback of corporate diversity programs following shifts in the national political landscape.
The retailer recently scaled back several representation initiatives aimed at supporting Black employees and minority-owned suppliers, moves that have drawn sharp criticism from advocacy groups and long-time shoppers who valued the company’s previous commitments to corporate diversity.
