Sebastien Buemi not ruling out Formula E comeback: “I don’t want to close any doors”

Sebastien Buemi remains open to a potential Formula E comeback despite stepping down from his primary position in the 2015‑16 season, stating he will not close any doors to the sport.

Envision reported earlier this year that 2017‑18 champion Buemi will exit after the current campaign, ending his 12‑year journey in the electric racing world.

With competing demands across the World Endurance Championship growing, the organization feared it would lack sufficient time to dedicate to Envision next year, especially with the advent of the new Gen4 chassis.

Even as fellow veterans such as Lucas di Grassi prepare to retire completely, Buemi has expressed flexibility and suggested his time might return should schedules align. “I don’t want to close any doors. You never know how the calendars and the championship evolve,” he remarked.

Though no longer the youngest among peers, Buemi distinguishes himself from di Grassi by leaving Formula E without fully concluding his involvement — adding a note of neutrality rather than profound emotion.

The French star rose to prominence during Formula E’s inaugural generation, steering the Renault e.dams outfit before helping establish the operations that evolved into Nissan’s factory team.

Since joining Jaguar’s customer Envision program in the winter of 2022, Buemi has proven to be a stalwart competitor, delivering winning performances including victories in Monte Carlo last year.

Formula E chief championship officer Alberto Longo confirmed that the authority would welcome Buemi back should he choose, praising his talent and character alongside his professionalism off the track.

Longo highlighted Buemi’s evolution through the years — from Renault to Nissan to Envision — noting that the constructor values his contributions deeply.

“He is a fantastic driver, genuinely talented, and an excellent person who cherishes his family. We’ll miss him,” Longo added.

Regarding his post‑Envision activities, Buemi outlined a modified path forward. Although he will not compete on the 2026‑27 grid, he will serve within the team in an advisory and development capacity.
New Envision role
While Buemi will not race for Envision, he will remain embedded within the squad, assuming an advisory and development function with the Chinese team. Under the mandate, he is expected to accomplish specific testing duties on Envision’s customer Jaguar Gen4 vehicle while selectively attending select events.
