President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, fulfilling his threat to rename the easternmost Great Lake as part of an escalating trade dispute with Canada.
During remarks in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump announced that the order, which directs the Interior Department to update the government’s geographic name databases to reflect the name change, is effective immediately.
Following the signing, Mr. Trump refreshed his criticisms of Canada, claiming the nation has been taking advantage of the United States and describing their bilateral trade relationship as highly unfavorable. He labeled Canada the most difficult partner to negotiate with on trade, while renewing his threat to impose significant tariffs on automobiles manufactured in the country.
“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade, very sadly,” Mr. Trump stated. “Even militarily, you know, we defend Canada for nothing. We receive nothing in return.”
Despite the adversarial rhetoric, Canada and the United States share deep diplomatic, military, and intelligence ties. Both nations are key partners in NATO, operating under a mutual defense pact, and Canada remains one of the United States’ closest intelligence allies.
Similar to his previous directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, Thursday’s executive order mandates federal agencies to adopt the new name, though international recognition is not guaranteed. Mr. Trump addressed reporters, asserting that his administration has completed all necessary administrative processes, including filing official documents and notifying relevant international and domestic entities.
“We’ve completed all the required steps,” he remarked. “This is official and effective immediately.”
The move follows a social media announcement by Mr. Trump earlier this week, in which he proposed renaming Lake Ontario after trade negotiations between the two nations collapsed. Canadian officials walked away from the talks, rejecting what they characterized as unacceptable U.S. demands. Mr. Trump linked the proposed name change to the deteriorating trade relationship, stating at the time that the U.S. would not expect to be conducting substantial business with the Ontario region going forward.
