The precise cause of Wednesday’s glacier collapse remains under investigation by researchers.
According to glaciologist Dr. Searle, Langtang Lirung—like the entire Himalayan range—has experienced gradual elevation over millennia due to sustained tectonic activity, where one geological plate has been thrust beneath another. “It’s analogous to using a car jack to lift a vehicle, progressively raising it higher.”
“As the mountain continues its upward movement, the glacier’s slope becomes increasingly steep until sections inevitably break away.”
Typically, such detachments involve smaller ice fragments that temporarily obstruct river channels before being naturally cleared, he explained. However, this recent catastrophe saw the entire glacier collapse simultaneously—a phenomenon he described as highly abnormal. “While these floods occur regularly, none have reached this magnitude.”
Dr. Searle attributed the event to a convergence of two key factors: ongoing tectonic uplift in the Himalayas and accelerating climate change driven by rising global temperatures that are increasing glacial melt rates.
“These interconnected forces are creating increasingly devastating natural disasters with alarming frequency.”
