Saim Ayub’s Brilliant Century Guides Jamaica Kingsmen to Narrow Victory Against St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots

Jamaica Kingsmen claimed their third win of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026 season and their second triumph over the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots, holding on for an 11-run victory in a gripping contest at Warner Park.

Saim Ayub delivered a match-winning all-round display, becoming the second player in as many nights to register a CPL century. Building on the momentum established by Tim Seifert’s hundred the previous evening, Ayub crafted a superb 102 off just 58 deliveries, propelling the Kingsmen to a competitive total of 182 for 7. He further enhanced his contribution with a vital bowling spell, supported by Hunain Shah and Jediah Blades, who each picked up two wickets.

The Patriots made an aggressive start with the ball, with Naseem Shah claiming two wickets in his opening two overs and leaving the Kingsmen struggling during the early Power Play overs. With both openers dismissed, Ayub walked in at number three and immediately set about stabilising the innings.

Wanindu Hasaranga then took control during the middle phase, capturing two wickets and pulling off a breathtaking one-handed diving catch to send back Usman Khan, a moment that stands as a strong candidate for catch of the tournament.

However, Ayub was determined not to let the Patriots seize control. After carefully constructing his innings, he gradually turned the tide before unleashing a fierce attack in the final seven overs. The Kingsmen plundered 91 runs during that phase, with Ayub leading the assault while Rovman Powell and Keemo Paul chipped in with valuable cameos that added 46 runs between them.

Ayub was the centre of attention as he brought up his maiden T20 century in emphatic style, sending an Obed McCoy delivery soaring into the stands. He fell attempting to repeat the shot on the very next ball, but his spectacular innings had already done the damage, lifting the Kingsmen to a commanding 182 for 7.

After a brief rain interruption and an extended break, the Patriots began their run chase in a manner that closely mirrored the Kingsmen’s start. They reached 42 runs during the Power Play and lost three wickets, one more than the Kingsmen at the same stage, with Blades and Paul providing the early breakthroughs.

The middle overs once again proved difficult as the Patriots’ innings lost its rhythm. Their batting order struggled to build partnerships while attempting to recover, with Andre Fletcher slowly finding his groove. Like Ayub, Fletcher took his time before shifting gears.

In a remarkable coincidence, both teams found themselves tied at 91 for 4 after 13 overs. The Patriots now needed a finishing surge comparable to the Kingsmen’s late-innings explosion.

Fletcher began to open his arms, striking boundaries with growing frequency and dragging the Patriots back into the contest. Just as the chase seemed to be turning, Ayub produced another decisive intervention, holding onto a sharp return catch off his own bowling to dismiss Fletcher.

A hush fell over the Warner Park crowd as the Patriots’ key batter walked back, though the drama was far from over.

Dasun Shanaka and Jason Holder kept the Patriots’ hopes flickering, smashing 24 runs off Blades’ 18th over and setting the stage for a nerve-wracking conclusion.

The final over had Jamaican supporters watching anxiously as Shanaka launched three sixes, reducing the equation to 31 runs needed off the last over. Odean Smith held his composure under immense pressure to seal the win, though the over was hardly a textbook exhibition of death bowling.

The loss keeps the Patriots anchored at the bottom of the standings, leaving them with significant ground to make up during their remaining home fixtures. The Kingsmen, meanwhile, hold on to fourth place.
