Paul McCartney is set to appear as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live‘s season finale this weekend, having previously declined an invitation to be roasted by Netflix. This marks Sir Paul’s fifth appearance as a musical guest, though he has made numerous cameos over the years due to his long-standing friendship with SNL creator and showrunner Lorne Michaels. Former cast member Will Ferrell will host the episode for the sixth time.
In a promotional clip, McCartney, Ferrell, and cast member Marcello Hernández light-heartedly suggest that viewers will primarily tune in for McCartney’s performance. McCartney also joked about being a big fan of Hernández’s mother, referencing Matt Damon’s Mother’s Day monologue from the previous week. When Hernández inquired about McCartney’s experience as a knight—a title bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for his contributions to music—McCartney casually claimed to have once slain a dragon. The promotional segment concludes with the trio performing the Justin Bieber remix of “Despacito.” An earlier host-only promo, which revisited Ferrell’s 1990s “Get Off The Shed” sketch, included a joke about McCartney where Ferrell playfully hit him with a belt.
In other news, McCartney’s 21st solo album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane, is set for release at the end of the month. He recently previewed a new track titled “Salesman Saint” on The Rest Is History podcast.
