Test cricket is evolving into a quicker contest, with an increasing number of matches settled well before the scheduled fifth day. Former England cricketer and noted commentator Michael Atherton has provided his assessment, attributing the shift to the impact of T20 cricket, elite fast bowling, the Decision Review System, and the growing prevalence of bowler‑friendly pitches at home.
Atherton’s perspective on why Tests are getting shorter
Atherton examined the evolving duration of Test matches while analyzing day three of the second Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s. The data underscores a striking transformation: in the 1970s, 77.65% of Tests reached the full five days, a figure that has dropped to 41.43% in the 2020s. Conversely, matches concluding on the fourth day have risen from 19.55% to 35.46%.
The most notable increase is in matches decided within three days. Merely 2.79% of Tests in the 1970s ended that swiftly, whereas 20.32% have done so in the current decade. More remarkably, 2.79% of Tests in the 2020s have been concluded inside two days. Atherton highlighted the rarity of such quick finishes in earlier decades.
“Nass and I played in the 1990s, when roughly 7% of matches ended in three days or less. That proportion has now climbed to about 20%, a substantial change. Over the past ten years, Test matches have finished in two days on nine occasions—something that never occurred between 1946 and 2000. So, the overarching trend is that Tests are concluding more quickly,” Atherton observed.
How T20 cricket promotes more aggressive batting
One of Atherton’s primary explanations for this shift is T20 cricket’s impact on batting technique and mindset. Modern batters spend a significant portion of their careers in franchise and domestic T20 leagues, where aggressive stroke‑making and rapid scoring are essential. Atherton suggests that these habits can carry over into the longer format.
“Due to T20, batting now carries higher risk, and taking more chances naturally increases the likelihood of dismissal, thereby accelerating the game,” he noted.
While aggressive batting can generate rapid runs, it also leads to wickets falling more frequently. This combination can truncate innings and, consequently, the overall length of a Test.
The impact of DRS on modern cricket
Atherton also attributes the rise in early finishes to the quality of fast bowling worldwide. With several sides possessing attacks that generate high pace, movement, and relentless pressure, batting line‑ups struggle to occupy the crease for long periods. Technology has likewise transformed match officiating. Atherton argues that the Decision Review System directly influences the number of dismissals, thereby quickening the pace of play. Ball‑tracking data gives umpires greater conviction in tight LBW decisions, while teams can contest disputed calls through reviews.
“There is also a strong cohort of fast bowlers at present. DRS has certainly played a role—I believe it shows when a batsman is out, which makes umpires more inclined to give LBW decisions,” Atherton added.
Another significant factor Atherton highlighted is the heightened emphasis on home conditions, especially since the inception of the World Test Championship. He contends that teams are increasingly tailoring pitch preparation to favor their strongest bowling assets.
“Teams are generally seeking greater home advantage, whether by producing turning tracks in India or seaming surfaces in England; since the World Test Championship began, pitches have generally become more bowler‑friendly,” Atherton further noted.
