England captain Joe Root expressed confidence in overcoming a recent dip in form, having been dismissed lbw nine times across his last 12 innings. He noted that his record of surpassing 14,000 test runs demonstrates his ability to navigate challenging phases in the game.
As England’s leading test run-scorer with 14,208 runs—second only to India’s Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) on the all-time list—Root has passed the fifty mark merely twice during the domestic summer season.
“I have been playing this game for a long time and have always discovered ways to solve these issues and work through them,” the 35-year-old told the BBC on Sunday.
“I do not see this situation as being any different. There is a reason I have accumulated 14,000 runs, and a reason I have competed at this elite level for nearly 15 years.”
Root made these remarks after England secured a home test series victory over Pakistan at Lord’s, where he scored just four and 24 before being dismissed lbw in both innings.
The preparations for the second test were overshadowed by controversy surrounding fast bowler Brydon Carse, who was omitted from the squad following an incident outside a nightclub in Derby.
Root stated that he addressed the matter with his players, emphasizing the squad’s need to celebrate successes in a responsible manner.
“It is difficult to win test matches and even harder to win a test series. Enjoy and celebrate the achievement, but do so in a sensible and mature way,” he added.
