The USD/INR pair reached a peak of nearly 95.7600 on August 19th and was trading near the 95.7200 level as of last Tuesday. Subsequent selling pressure drove the pair down to the 95.1500 area as August concluded. With September beginning, traders face uncertainty regarding the currency pair’s near-term trajectory.
While USD/INR has maintained an overall bullish trend and established recent highs, there are signs of consolidation attempting to prevent further upward movement. The recent peaks have not challenged the late July highs around 96.6000, let alone May’s upper range near 96.9000. However, this does not necessarily indicate a bearish outlook for the pair.
Trading USD/INR in the high ranges presents significant risks for speculators. India’s government prohibits retail trading of this currency pair, and liquidity remains low and uneven, with sharp movements possible during large position entries. These factors should prompt many traders to consider alternative currency pairs.
For those trading through international brokers, opportunities still exist. However, day traders seeking broad market correlations encounter challenges. Following Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s speech last Friday, USD strength emerged in broader Forex markets, yet USD/INR moved lower. This occurred even as Middle Eastern tensions and rising crude oil prices added downward pressure.
Long-Term Bullish Trend Faces Short-Term Pressure
The Reserve Bank of India maintains strict oversight of the exchange rate, making USD/INR trading challenging for retail participants. The recent decline from recent highs, while potentially normal in broader market contexts, reflects unique influences specific to this pair.
-
Despite a long-term bullish trajectory, the past few months have seen persistent debates over price levels, with lower reversals causing losses for trend-following traders.
-
While some argue USD/INR should rise after touching support levels, this may require extended patience and could result in significant losses if leverage is excessive.
USD/INR Outlook September 2026
Projected Trading Range: 94.8500 to 96.5000
While upside potential continues to attract attention, recent trading underscores the need for caution. USD/INR may resume its upward trajectory, but timing entry points remains challenging for short-term traders. The 95.0000 level likely serves as durable support, with potential for another upward move. From a policy standpoint, USD/INR offers bullish potential due to India’s exchange rate management, though traders remain exposed to RBI intervention that could trigger downside reversals.
