A-Leagues Kickoff Under Shadow of Manchester City Financial Breach as APL Reviews Findings

The Premier League’s determination of Manchester City’s financial rule violations has already impacted the global football landscape, casting a shadow over the Australian A-Leagues’ season launch in Sydney.

League officials confirmed Wednesday that City has been found guilty of all charges related to financial misconduct, including the use of “sham contracts” over a nine-year period, resulting in an inflated income of over £900 million.

City denies the charges and has announced plans to appeal, arguing the ruling contains “clear material errors in law, principle, and fact” and is therefore unsafe.

The A-Leagues confirmed it has not investigated Melbourne City, the Australian club affiliated with Manchester City, but has pledged to examine the Premier League’s findings thoroughly.

Manchester City board member Simon Pearce serves on the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) board and is vice-chair of Melbourne City, highlighting the interconnected nature of the City Football Group’s 12 global clubs, including New York City FC and Yokohama F. Marinos.

APL CEO Steve Rosich stated, “We’ll review the Premier League’s decision thoroughly and note that legal proceedings remain ongoing.”

The Manchester City scandal is the latest in a series of off-field challenges confronting the A-Leagues, which will begin on 16 October despite ongoing disputes with referees and an unresolved player pay agreement with the APL.

The injury to Norwich City’s Mohamed Touré has created an opportunity for Melbourne City striker Max Caputo, who aims to build on his eight-goal season performance from last year.

The 2026-27 season begins with the Sydney derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers on 16 October, followed by the A-League Women’s opening round featuring a grand final rematch in Wellington.
