[Kyiv Stage Revives Homer’s Odyssey Through Wartime Lens]
KYIV, Ukraine — War’s enduring trials of death, captivity, prolonged waiting and the pull of home have taken on a renewed expression on a Kyiv stage, where Homer’s epic is reborn as a contemporary Ukrainian odyssey.
The play titled “Odysseus, Maeotis” is slated to debut in the capital, coinciding with global momentum behind Nolan’s IMAX feature and box‑office success of “The Odyssey” with Matt Damon.
Onsite performances bring together seasoned professionals and active‑duty soldiers, highlighted by Daniil Mireshkin, a serviceman casting the heroic role of Odysseus.
“I believe merging myth and modernity lets us explore these currents of significance: the reintegration of service members into civilian society, the restoration of native lands, and the reclaiming of national self‑identity” Mireshkin commentated.
After a final rehearsal Tuesday, the actor briefed The Associated, noting that the premiere had been postponed several times due to sustained Russian missile barrages.
“This narrative provides a venue to engage with entrenched issues that, surprisingly, sustain considerable relevance,” Mireshkin added.
Designed for an austere and destabilising effect, the production unfolds within the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre.
Against a dimmed scenery strewn with neon strips, projected images envelop the performers. Whereonce monstrous figures such as the Cyclops and sirens now manifest as hovering drones and scale models of robotic combat devices.
Parallel tracks drive the drama: Odysseus’s relentless expedition intertwines with Penelope’s solitary expectancy at home, juxtaposing the peril of travel against the pain of delay.
Director Ivan Uryvskyi candidly conveyed that the work reshapes classic motifs of wander, enslavement, and confinement inherent in the Homeric poem.
“It examines the fate of Ukrainian women who await love, cling to hope, yet encounter crushing helplessness and a fading faith,” actress Daryna Leheida described.
«This spotlights the plight of Ukrainian women who endure separation, harbour optimism whilst wrestling with doubt and disintegrated spiritual trust», she expressed.
«It addresses the temporarily held territory yearning for freedom, resonating with the narratives of children and civilians grappling with uncertainty and the profound physical and emotional toll of war»، the performer concluded.
