Two years after her unexpected dismissal, the ABC has reversed course and brought back Sarah Macdonald to Sydney’s local radio lineup, where she will take over the afternoon slot formerly held by James Valentine starting in March.

Ben Latimer, the ABC audio director who had originally dismissed Macdonald without comment, announced her return on Wednesday, confirming she will host the afternoon program.

Latimer said, “We’ve heard how much 702 ABC Sydney listeners have missed Sarah, and I’m delighted she has agreed to return.”

He added, “There’s something special about Sarah hosting Afternoons. She knew James well, understands the audience, and grasps what the program means to them. I’m eager to hear her put her own stamp on the show.”

The popular ABC Sydney morning presenter was sacked in November 2024, prompting an outcry from fellow hosts and listeners.

Macdonald announced her departure on air in 2024, telling listeners, “Well, here’s the disappointing news: I won’t be on the radio with you next year, as the ABC has decided not to renew my morning contract.”

She said, “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished—ratings are up, I’ve broken numerous stories, conducted the first interview with the new governor‑general, got the New South Wales premier to regularly take listener calls, led election coverage, and oversaw the move to our Parramatta studios.”

Valentine, a broadcaster and saxophonist, passed away in April, three months after retiring from 25 years hosting Sydney’s Afternoons program.

Macdonald confirmed she received a text from ABC managing director Hugh Marks on April Fool’s Day requesting a meeting.

Macdonald said, “I’ve missed the wit and wisdom of ABC listeners. I thank them for their support and look forward to being back on air. I’ll do my best to inform, entertain, and stand with listeners as we navigate both the big and small issues of life.”

The move also adds one woman to the ABC’s otherwise all‑male lineup from Breakfast through to Drive in 2026, following Chris Bath’s replacement by male presenter Thomas Oriti.

At the time of her dismissal, Media Watch host Paul Barry, said on X: “I can’t believe this. I’m hearing that #ABC has dumped Sarah Macdonald from ABC Sydney. IMHO she’s brilliant—one of the best things on radio. WTAF?”

Outgoing drive presenter Richard Glover expressed the shock felt by ABC staff on his show.

He said, “The news today that management decided not to renew Sarah’s contract has left our little team shell‑shocked—we were all taken aback, shocked, surprised, amazed, aghast; pick any word you like.”
